Bill Simmons is an outstanding member of Lee's School of Religion faculty. Initially employed in August of 1986, Simmons, also a Lee alumnus, teaches New Testament Studies, including courses such as Romans and Galatians, First and Second Corinthians, Prison Epistles, New Testament Greek, Luke-Acts, New Testament Theology and New Testament Survey. He also teaches Master's level courses, such as Biblical Criticism and Hermeneutics, Advanced Pauline Theology as well as several others.
In his doctoral work, Simmons focused on the theological continuity between Jesus and Paul. His area of specialty addresses the historical and cultural background of the New Testament. He is currently researching the origin and development of the various Jewish and Greco-Roman groups of the New Testament world.
Simmons received the Lee University Excellence in Research Award in 1994. His published works include "A Theology of Inclusion," "New Testament Survey," and a commentary on Galatians. Simmons has also published several articles in the "Evangelical Dictionary of New Testament Theology.
Throughout his career at Lee, he has presented papers at the national conferences of the Society of Biblical Literature and the Evangelical Theological Society.
He has also done teaching and mission work at the European Bible Seminary in Rudersburg, Germany. He has taught in other countries such as Korea, Honduras, the Philippines, Guatemala, Cuba and Peru.
Simmons enjoys contributing to the local church, he being an active member of the Westmore Church of God in Cleveland, Tenn. since 1986.
Simmons is a sponsor for Pi Delta Omicron, Lee's honor society for Bible majors.
He and his wife Lenae have two sons, David Andrew and Nathaniel Stewart, and one daughter, Laura Marie. Originally from Matairie, La., he enjoys a variety of hobbies, such as writing travelogues for the local newspaper and a variety of outdoor sports.
